The Stoic Mindset
Format: 📖 Book
Overall impression:
Much better than I thought it would be, plenty of good examples on daily practice, especially if you’re an athlete. Can be read in an afternoon.
The ten principles (chapters) he covers are:
- Use setbacks as signposts: practice setbacks
- Judge less, understand more: emotion doesn’t follow from an event but rather from your judgement about the event.
- Win by not focusing on winning: dichotomy of choice, what do you control, and what do you not?
- What’s good for the team is good for you: the view from above, cosmopolis.
- Accept your fate (and love it): things will go as they will go.
- Death makes life epic: minimize regret.
- Happiness is a side effect: increase gratitude
- A map is good, a compass is better: what suits your character, what brings you joy/pleasure, where do your interests lie.
- Character is your most important project: courage, temperance, justice, wisdom
- Actions speak louder than words: do the thing.
