Revenge of the Sith

Author: Matthew Stover

Format: 📖 Book

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½

Overall impression:

Wow, the writing here was so good. There are some slight (better?) differences from the movie, but the despair is deep.

Thoughts on some parts of the book that I shared in the “Wookies and Bookies” book club I’m a part of…

Chapter 6: Rescue

It’s wild to me how well hidden Palpatine kept himself from two of the most skilled and powerful Jedi of the age. How helpless he made himself. Incredible cunning and misdirection.

Very reminiscent of the Darth Plagues book where his master barely registers Palpatine’s power in the dark side (which he ultimately uses to dispatch his master).

Chapter 9: Padmé

“After an all-too brief eternity, the kiss finally ended”. What a great sentence!

Also, stories are how we learn to live and love. I haven’t read Brotherhood yet, but I did read Master and Apprentice. It strikes me that how Qui Gon holds back truth from Obi Wan is passed on from one generation to another. Qui Gon’s inability or reluctance to be fully truthful with Obi Won has direct consequences for Anikin’s ability and desire to be truthful with Obi Won, his best friend.

Stories instruct us how to live and love and whether it’s me, my partner, my kids, I hope I’m able to be honest and known well by the ones I love and who love me.

What a different galaxy that would make.

Chapter 13: The Will of the Force

“I’m not speaking of your power Anakin, but if your heart. The greatness in you is a greatness of spirit. Courage and generosity, compassion and commitment. These are your virtues.” … Anakin found he had nothing to say… 🥹🥹🥹😭😭

I feel like this is one of the few times Obi Wan has been on the level with Anakin about his feelings and said what Anakin actually needed to hear. So much, “my YOUNG friend”, or generally always talking from a point of power difference. I saw this a lot in how Qui Gon’s relations with Obi Wan as well.

Don’t forget to tell someone you love them today. You never know when they’re heading off to face General Grievous or to be manipulated by the most powerful Sith Lord.

It might make all the difference.

Chapter 18: Order 66

“The Clone Wars were the perfect Jedi trap. By fighting at all, the Jedi lost.”

Uff 😓😓

Final thoughts…

In A New Hope, when Obi Wan says “And he was a good friend..” I picture him flashing back through all of this book and before in an instant. Soooo much weight and love in those six words. Really amazing book, love the depth between the lines.
