My current job at UW–Madison is not one I plan on leaving.
Or at least, I don’t plan on leaving the organization.
This is pretty counter to the “job hop” advice most tech workers get, change jobs every 2-3 years (or sooner) so you can:
- be promoted quicker
- earn a raise and greater intervals
- receive stock vesting options
Of course I would like to make more money, but there are a lot of benefits being at the place I’m at with a plan to stay for decades.
The questions I have now are:
- “How do I stay focused, energized, and excited about my career?”
- “What is really important here?”
- “If I have decades here, what kind of projects and what kind of timelines can we take on?”
- “What kind of legacy can I and my team leave here?”
This isn’t really a talk, more of an “un-conference” conversation, but I think it’s valuable to have.
